Really enjoyed the writeup. Lots of good thoughts. Surprising that a critic of your caliber is not more knowledgeable of Shorts. Foundational for independent film. Emerging new artists come through that way! Thanks for an excellent post.

thank you :) and totally agree that short films, as a form, are foundational. you can get away with a lot of aggressively experimental stuff in a briefer runtime.

i actually used to be a lot better with keeping up with the Oscars shorts, to the point of watching as many of the pre-nomination shortlisted shorts (lol) i could get my hands on. but then i started writing and now have less time to watch things, and i also found that the types of shorts that the Academy rewards are not always my cup of tea. they're not experimental enough!

This is such a great writeup! Although, it did remind me how poorly No Other Choice is faring outside of the International category. I'd love to see it get more!

thank you!! i like No Other Choice a lot but it strikes me as the kind of the film that is really popular among the Letterboxd set but not at all to the Academy's tastes. Plus, with Neon stretching their campaign budget across several genuine contenders, something is gonna fall through the cracks.

I would be thrilled to see almost no best picture overlap in the crafts categories. I thrive on chaos
